Defender 110 – first little jobs

I’ve had the 200tdi Defender for 1 week now, and used it for 2 surfing trips to Cornwall already.
Over the course of a tankful of diesel, it returned about 25mpg – that’s a mixture of round town, and up and down hills to Cornwall. Not bad, but I am sure it can be improved upon.

I have also been putting together a little job list, and it looks a little something like this:
- Diff lock light is not working – need to investigate if its just the switch, bulb has blown or the diff lock is not engaging.
- Nearside main bulb is not working – need to see if its dodgy connection or a new bulb is needed.
- Rear shocks need replacing – this became evident when travelling over some speed bumps – the back end was bouncing around all over the place. Upon closer inspection it looks like the originals are still on the Landy!
- Full service – i want to change all the oils (engine, gearbox/transfer box and axles) and replace all the filters (oil, air and fuel)
I am sorting the shocks and headlight first, as they affect the everyday driving of the vehicle.
I will keep you posted on my progress.

I left a message on facebook regarding your Economy but perhaps not many will read that. You should seriously consider fitting a Discovery LT230t transfer box to the Defender if it hasn’t got one fitted already ( which I doubt.). The ratios on the disco tbox is 1.22 to 1 compared with the Defender standard 1.4 to 1 or 1.6 to 1.
You’ll drop the rpms the engine is doing and save diesel. Setting the valve clearances should help too. 25mpg on a 200tdi engine not that good we got 34mpg on a run in our disco in Holland
Trailerfitter – I did have a Discovery transfer box but sold it earlier in the year, as I wasn’t expecting to get another Defender so soon! Doh!
I am going to have a look at the valve clearances in due course, but all the tdi’s (200 and 300) i have owned in the past have given me 25-27mpg – i just think its the amount of Devon hills i drive around on a daily basis!
Did you get the diff lock light sorted? I have the same problem on my 110 and would appreciate any pointers you can give.
Yes I did find the problem. It turned out to be the diff lock switch on the gearbox that was faulty. I bought a new one (around £5) and fitted it and the light worked instantly.
