Which Land Rover to take off roading? Series 1

Land Rover Series 1In this first part of the Which Land Rover to take off roading series we are looking at the Land Rover which started it all - the Series 1.

Old & fragile they may appear when compared to tricked up Defenders, but you'll be suprised just how good they are!

Lets take a closer look.

They're narrow and light, which are ideal attributes for a nimble off roader, so picking your way between obstacles is easy and the flat sides make placing the Land Rover a cinch.

They haven't got the torquiest engines in the world, but at half the weight of a new Discovery 4, they perform admirably.

You won't want to drive too quickly cross country either, partly because of the leaf sprung suspension, but also due to the expense if you get it wrong!

Although there used to be plenty of spares available for the Series 1, finding decent, original panels and some other unique parts is becoming tricky.

Land Rover Series 1 Summary

  • Pros: Small & light
  • Cons: Spares availability, comfort
  • Off roading rating: 8/10
  • Price guide: £800-£15000
  • Advice: Don't buy a pristine one for heavy off roading as there are plenty of ratty ones around - watch out for rusty bulkheads though!
