Land Rover Kinetic Energy Recovery Rope (KERR)

A good strong KERR rope (Kinetic Energy Recovery Rope) is a good tool to keep in your off roading arsenal.

So this weeks featured product is just that - a KERR rope.

The idea behind a KERR rope is it that it is basically a big elastic band! It allows the recovery of stricken vehicle that may not be able to be recovered using a normal tow rope.

As the tow vehicle sets off at speed, the rope stretches and stores up kinetic energy. Once the rope is stetched, it wants to retract back to its original length (just like an elastic band), and in doing so will pull the stuck vehicle out of the mud/sand etc.

Its very important that both vehicles have strong recovery points, because this rope can put many tonnes of force on these points. It has not been unknown for tow bar bolts to break and send the tow bar flying through the air at massive speed (just like a slingshot or catapult) - so you have to keep bystanders away from the recovery situation.

The most ideal situation would be to use a bridal attached to both chassis legs using jate rings or similar. This will halve the load on the recovery point, and mean that the chassis takes most of the force.
