Land Rover Essentials: Emergency Items

Land Rover Emergency ItemsIf you're on an expedition, you're probably going to explore remote places far from medical facilities, which in some countries may be very poor anyway.

Its recommended that anybody planning such a trip to enrol on a basic first aid course before they set off and read all the information you can glean from the internet and specialist books. Type in overland medicine into Google and you'll find plenty of options!

Also make an appointment with your GP and tell them what countries you'll be travelling through. Your doctor will know what innoculations you require and whether you need to take a course of anti-malaria tablets.

A basic first aid kit for your Land Rover is essential. Make sure it contains a selection of the following:

  • Plasters
  • Bandages
  • Gauzes
  • Antiseptic creams
  • Eyewash

When travelling abroad, Imodium anti diarrhoea tablets are also highly recommended, but make sure you also have packets of Dioralyte (or similar) rehydration salts. Lifesystems first aid packs for travellers are excellent, and they also offer emergency dental packs too.

A fire extinguisher should always be carried, and must be securely fixed to the vehicle. Put it in a place where it is easy to get to in an emergency, like next to the stove, by the back door or on the front A pillar (where mine is).

Blankets are also a must and not just for cold climates. It can be freezing at night in the desert. Also make sure there are sleeping bags for all occupants. Even if you don't intend to camp out, you might get stranded somewhere remote and be forced to sleep outside your vehicle.
