Land Rover 110 Project: Preparing for painting
I have spent the weekend preparing the roof for painting on the Land Rover 110.
Ever since I got the vehicle I vowed to get rid of the crappy green flames that a previous owner had painted on. (see the photo on the left)
So with some nice weather, I set to work prepping the roof to accept some nice white paint.
Before the roof can be painted, I had to prepare the surface. So it was out with the electric sander and some 240 grit sandpaper which will give a good "key" for the new paint to attach to. After sanding, any bare metal patches were treated with etch primer - important on the aluminum roof.
I also took the time to fill in some of the small holes left by removal of the roof lights. Up until now I had kept them covered with some duct tape to stop the rain getting in.
I removed the lights because they were bolted directly to the roof. If one of the lights had caught a branch, then it would have tore the soft aluminium roof on the Land Rover. I will put them back on a proper light bar or roof rack at a later date.
So that is the roof prepared and ready for painting. Next on the job list is to prepare the rest of the body which will be done in the same way.
I have a few litres of satin nato green military paint on the way which will do the whole vehicle and I will update the blog on the progress in the next week or two.
