Land Rover 110 Defender Project: Job List

Land Rover 110 Station WagonSince arriving on my driveway, the Land Rover 110 hasn't moved!

It is is supposed to be my daily driver, but it has just sat there as the job list starts to mount!

As I explained in my previous blog post, a previous owner has abused this Land Rover, and the more time I spend going over it, the more downright dangerous things I find.

So lets have a little look at the immediate jobs on the list.

Fix indicator fault
The indicators on the Landy are not working. Could be a a simple relay or the hazards switch, but will need further investigation.

Replace rear shock absorbers
When I drove the Landy home, I noticed that the back end of the car was bouncing around more than I expected it would. So when I got home I jumped up and down in the back whilst my dad watched the suspension underneath.

Result - both rear shocks were knackered, and need replacing. One shock had no bushes in at all - it was metal on metal.

Replace fan belt/Secure alternator
Another thing I noticed when I drove the car home, was that the temperature gauge was reading high, and at times got seriously high.

A quick check under the bonnet revealed a loose fan belt. Upon closer inspection, the bolt securing the alternator to the engine block was MISSING!

This meant the alternator was loose and not keeping the correct tension on the fan belt. Therefore the water pump wasn't turning as fast as it could be, resulting in the higher coolant temperatures as indicated on the gauge.

Replace axle breathers
The breathers on both axles have been torn off, so need replacing.

The axles need to breathe, especially when wading, so the axle breathers are tubes with one end attached to the axle and the other venting to air high up on the chassis. This allows the axles to breathe even if they are submerged in water.

So there you have it, a quick overview of what needs to be done to get the Land Rover into a usable roadworthy condition.

Land Rover 110 Project: Job List Summary

The list below is an ever expanding job list that I will be updating frequently as I find more job's to do on the vehicle. Once I have written up each job, I will link it to the relevant article page.

The idea is to make this a summary page for all jobs/articles that I carry out on the Land Rover 110.
