Improve your Land Rover fuel economy: Electric Fan

The new twin fan assembly I salvaged from the scrap yard!To kick off the new series on improving your Land Rover's fuel economy, we will take a look at the electric fan.

Engines need to be cooled in use of they would overheat and seize.

Up to the latest generation Land Rover, fixed or viscous fans were driven by belts on the engine, whether the engine needed to be cooled or not.

Spinning the the fan uses energy that could otherwise be used for propelling you along, so fitting an electric fan can release power as it will only work when needed.

On some journeys the fan may not even kick in if the airflow through the radiator is sufficient, or the engine hasn't reached its full operating temperature.

Kenlowe is one the companies which make good electric fan kits to fit Land Rovers, but you can modify other cars fans to fit your Land Rover.

This mod is exactly what I did to my Land Rover not so long ago. Instead of buying a brand new kit, I salvaged a double fan kit from a car off the scrap yard, and wired it into the Land Rover. Have a look at this blog post which covers my mod: Land Rover Electric Fan

Improve your Land Rover fuel economy: Electric Fan

  • Cost: £10 from the scrap yard - to over £100 for a full brand new kit
